27 May 1997 -- Mithra Systems was presented with the On-Line Document of the Year Award for a children's electronic guide designed for the National Waterways Museum in Gloucester.  The award was presented to Mithra Systems' proprietor Ron Harpham by Alan West, managing director of the competition's organiser and sponsor, SoftKlone UK Ltd.  Runners up included Logica UK, Siemens GEC Communication Systems Ltd and Bradford & Bingley. Gloucester-based Mithra Systems was commissioned to produce the electronic guide for the Museum with the aim of overcoming the limitations of paper-based material.  As well as being expensive, printed literature quickly becomes out of date, whereas it is easy to update the electronic guide.  Taking just three months to develop, the guide has been distributed on disk to schools, who can load the material into PCs to find out more about the Museum.  The electronic guide will ultimately be made available on the Museum's web site and also used in the Museum gallery.  Including plenty of attractive graphics and interactive elements, the guide is simple for children to use, whilst giving the Museum a modern, high-tech image. Says SoftKlone managing director Alan West, "Mithra Systems' entry was outstanding.  It makes large amounts of varied information particularly easy and enjoyable to find, making the most of the functionality within the development software." The competition was open to all users of the Hypertext Development Kit (HDK) who number thousands in the UK alone. HDK is the world's leading software for creating and managing on-line information using hypertext.  Easy to use yet containing a range of sophisticated features, HDK supports both WinHelp and HTML, the two main hypertext environments.  HDK has been developed by Australian software company Virtual Media.
